What is a JEF embroidery file?
JEF is the embroidery file format for Janome machines (and some Elna and Kenmore models). It stores stitches, Janome thread colors and a hoop code that tells the machine which hoop the design was made for. If the hoop code is larger than your machine's hoops, the design won't load.

Why hoop codes matter
A JEF file records which hoop it was designed for. Your Janome checks that code, and if it's a hoop your machine doesn't have, it may refuse the design or show it in the wrong hoop. Give us your machine model when you order and we'll assign the right hoop.
JEF vs JEF+
JEF is the sewing format. JEF+ is an object-based working file created in Janome's Artistic Digitizer software, which lets you edit the shapes. You only need JEF to sew. Ask if you'd also like an editable working file.
Janome multi-needle machines
Janome's MB-4 and MB-7 multi-needle machines read JEF and are popular with small businesses. They have smaller hoops than full commercial machines, so large designs may need to be sized down or split. See our Janome machine guide.

Why won't my Janome open a JEF file?
Usually the hoop code in the file is for a hoop your machine doesn't support, or the design is too large. We set the hoop for your specific model.
Can Janome machines read DST?
Some Janome models and software can import DST, but JEF is the native, most reliable choice. We include both.
