Applique and tackle twill digitizing
Applique sews a piece of fabric onto the garment instead of filling the area with thread. The file runs a placement line, stops for the fabric, tacks it down, stops for trimming, then covers the edge with a satin or decorative border. It uses far fewer stitches than fill, and it's the standard for varsity letters, Greek lettering and team numbers. Pricing starts at $35.

How an applique file sews
- Placement stitch: a running stitch outlines exactly where the fabric goes. The machine stops.
- Fabric placed: the operator lays the applique fabric (or a pre-cut twill piece) over the outline.
- Tack-down: a running or zigzag stitch secures the fabric. For pre-cut pieces this is the only hold-down pass.
- Trim stop (for fabric placed uncut): the machine stops so you can trim the excess close to the tack-down.
- Cover stitch: a satin or decorative border covers the raw edge, then any detail stitching sews on top.
We name each stop in the PDF preview and set the color changes so your machine pauses at the right moments.
Tackle twill for teams and schools
Tackle twill (pre-cut polyester twill with a satin or zigzag border) is the standard for jerseys, varsity jackets and Greek lettering. If you cut your twill with a laser or a vinyl cutter, we'll supply a matching cut file generated from the same outline, so pieces drop straight into the placement line.

Designs that suit applique
Bold shapes and letters work best. Very small pieces (under about 0.5") are hard to place and trim, so we'll fill those instead. Tell us whether the fabric will be pre-cut or trimmed in the hoop.

Can you provide cut files for my laser or cutter?
Yes. We can export the applique outlines as SVG, DXF or PLT that match the placement line. Tell us your cutter and software.
Satin or zigzag border for tackle twill?
Satin gives a traditional, bold edge. Zigzag (e-stitch) is common on twill numbers and letters because it's faster and more durable in the wash. We can do either.
How much does applique digitizing cost?
Small applique designs start at $20, and most applique lettering or medium designs are $35. Large jacket-back applique is $60 or quoted individually.
