Large designs are split into sections with different fill angles so the jacket isn't dragged in one direction.

The problem with big designs

Scaling up a left chest logo doesn't make a jacket back. At large sizes every weakness shows:

  • Too much density builds a stiff, bulletproof shield that pulls the jacket in and ripples the fabric around it.
  • Long fill runs drag the fabric in one direction, so shapes distort and outlines stop lining up.
  • Excess trims and jumps add long run times and more thread breaks across a 60,000-stitch design.

How we digitize large designs

  • Lighter fills: large filled areas use more open stitch spacing and textured fills that cover without the weight.
  • Layering, not stacking: where colors overlap, the lower layer is cut out rather than sewn underneath, which avoids double density.
  • Split and alternate angles: big fills are split into sections with varied stitch angles so the pull is balanced across the garment.
  • Pathing: the design travels logically across the garment with hidden travel runs, cutting trims and color changes.
  • Garment-aware underlay: heavy canvas, nylon shells, fleece and quilted jackets each get a different base.

Sewing tips for large designs

  • Use the largest hoop that fits and a cutaway stabilizer. Add a second layer for stretchy hoodies.
  • On quilted or puffy jackets, hoop the backing only, then float the jacket and baste it.
  • Slow the machine a little on the densest sections of big designs.

Chenille and applique for big designs

For varsity-style backs or very large logos, applique (fabric pieces with a satin border) can cut stitch count and run time by 50% or more, and it looks great. Ask us to quote both options.

How much does jacket back digitizing cost?

Designs up to 12" wide and about 50,000 stitches cost $60. Bigger or very detailed designs are quoted individually before we start.

How many stitches is a jacket back?

Usually 30,000 to 80,000. A well-digitized design uses the fewest stitches that still give full coverage, which saves you sewing time.

What's the largest design you can digitize?

Any size your machine's hoop allows. For designs larger than your hoop, we can split the file into aligned sections for multi-hooping.
